Job Summary
The Center for Research on Racial Trauma and Community Healing at the Institute of Living at Hartford HealthCare seeks to study how racial trauma affects individuals, families, and neighborhoods and to develop community-driven responses. The Center works in partnership with people with lived experience, community organizations, universities, and state agencies.
The Clinical Research Associate supports research at the Center, from study design and Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval through data collection, analysis, and dissemination. This role works across current projects and supports the development of new Center studies as they emerge.
This position is well suited for someone with training in social science research, strong project management skills, and a commitment to social and political justice. The Clinical Research Associate will work closely with community partners and people with lived experience of incarceration and must be comfortable working in academic, clinical, and community settings.
Key responsibilities
Research design and regulatory work
Prepare and manage IRB submissions, amendments, continuing reviews, and consent materials

Contribute to study design, protocols, and data collection instruments

Maintain regulatory files and ensure compliance with human subjects protections, including research with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated participants

Data collection and analysis
Recruit participants and conduct interviews, focus groups, and surveys in community, clinical, and correctional settings

Manage, clean, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and integrate findings in mixed methods designs

Apply trauma-informed practices in all participant contact

Project management
Coordinate timelines, deliverables, and budgets across multiple concurrent projects

Track grant milestones and prepare progress reports for funders

Schedule and support meetings with community partners, universities, and state agencies

Community partnership
Work alongside credible messengers and community researchers as partners in the research process

Support community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) and clinical research activities, including shared decision-making and returning findings to communities

Dissemination
Draft manuscripts, reports, conference presentations, and community briefs

Conduct literature reviews and maintain reference libraries

Contribute to grant proposals

Qualifications

Bachelor or Masters degree in a health care field. Some roles can be performed with an Associate level degree, with significant health care training.

Registered Nurse in CT may be required for some projects.
Demonstrated clinically competence with patient related measurements and high degree of accuracy with respect to documentation and data collection.
Demonstrated initiative and excellent organizational skills in planning and executing study logistics.

Experience in a clinical area, e.g. Nursing, Nuclear Medicine, etc.

Ability to use time efficiently. Outstanding interpersonal, communications, negotiation skills and enthusiasm. Ability to work independently yet use good judgment in seeking advice when necessary. Knowledge of research methodology, data analysis, statistical analysis and associated software is preferred.
Preferred qualifications
Experience with CBPAR or other community-engaged research
Experience working with people affected by incarceration, violence, or racial trauma
Familiarity with trauma-informed practice
Proficiency with qualitative software (such as NVivo or Dedoose) and statistical software (such as SPSS, R, or Stata)
Peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations
