This role drives efforts to reduce harm by analyzing patient safety events, facilitating Root Cause Analyses (RCAs), coordinating peer review processes, managing grievances, and partnering with leaders to embed high reliability practices into daily operations. The Officer collaborates with Medical Staff, Nursing, Risk Management, and interdisciplinary teams to establish patient safety indicators, review patient records, and evaluate care processes. This includes audits, quality initiatives, performance improvement work, regulatory compliance, and risk‑related reviews. The role requires strong analytical capability to interpret data, identify trends, compare performance to benchmarks, uncover system vulnerabilities, and to collaborate with clinical and operational leaders for decision‑making. The Officer works collaboratively across departments, participates and reports out at meetings (i.e. Quality, Safety) manages multiple priorities, and uses data tools and spreadsheets to support patient safety and high reliability work.

A core responsibility is the development, delivery, and sustainment of high reliability training and operations across the organization. The Officer designs the high reliability curriculum, trains leaders, supports department‑level coaching, and builds a long‑term plan to expand high reliability education to all staff. This work ensures high reliability becomes a consistent, reinforced expectation throughout OSUMC. The Officer leads patient safety strategy development, facilitates implementation, and monitors effectiveness. This includes coordinating patient safety policies, conducting staff education, assessing the facility for safety risks, and directing process improvements that prevent adverse outcomes. The role fosters a culture of safety and serves as a resource for patient safety, high reliability, and performance improvement.
